Governor Patrick Morrisey and First Lady Denise Morrisey have invited families throughout West Virginia to attend the Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration. The event is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, at 6 p.m. on the steps of the Capitol facing Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston. The celebration is free and open to the public.
“As we begin this blessed month celebrating the birth of Christ, we are looking forward to having West Virginians join us in kicking off the Christmas season with the lighting of the Capitol Christmas Tree,” said Governor Patrick Morrisey. “We are asking all those attending who are able to donate a toy or coat and help bring holiday cheer to West Virginia children in foster care.”
A 25-foot spruce, donated by Crickmer Farms on behalf of the West Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association, will serve as this year’s tree. Amanda Barren, anchor at WOWK, will emcee the ceremony. Entertainment includes performances from Capital High School’s band and choir, River City Youth Ballet, sing-alongs, and other seasonal activities. Those unable to attend can watch a live stream provided by West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
After the lighting ceremony, guests can visit the West Virginia Culture Center for refreshments such as cookies and hot chocolate, photos with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, crafts, and additional holiday-themed activities.
The event also supports a toy and coat drive benefiting foster children through donations collected for the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia. The organization has noted a particular need for gifts suitable for older children this year. Donations can be made at either the Culture Center or on the Capitol steps during the event.
