West Virginia State University announced on March 10 that its annual Day of Giving Challenge will take place over a 24-hour period beginning at noon on Tuesday, March 17, and ending at noon on Wednesday, March 18. The university has set a fundraising goal of $500,000 to support student success during this event.

The challenge’s theme is “135 Years of Yellow Jacket Pride,” aligning with the university’s Founders Day on March 17. In addition to the monetary goal, WVSU aims to have at least 250 participants contribute during the campaign.

“Our annual Day of Giving Challenge is even more significant this year as West Virginia State University is celebrating 135 years of impact and academic excellence,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “The generous and sustained support of our donors throughout our history has created countless opportunities for students to pursue their dreams of a college education, and has enabled the university to continue to grow and serve the needs of the state and region.”

The event is organized by both the university and the WVSU Foundation to raise funds for scholarships, athletics, special projects, and other student activities. This year’s campaign also supports WVSU’s ongoing $25 million capital campaign.

“Every gift to West Virginia State University is an investment in opportunity, innovation, and the future of our students,” said WVSU Vice President for University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation Trey Jones. “This year on our Day of Giving it is even more meaningful as all funds raised also go toward our State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign which is opening doors and empowering the next generation of leaders across West Virginia and beyond.”

Donors can choose to support any of the four colleges within WVSU: Arts and Humanities; Business and Social Sciences; Natural Sciences and Mathematics; or Professional Studies. A Senior Class Campaign will allow graduating seniors who donate $25 or more to receive a philanthropy cord for commencement in May.

Last year, more than half of all WVSU students received financial aid through scholarships, loans, or grants. The university notes that these resources are essential for many students’ ability to continue their education.

A dedicated donation website will open on March 17 for contributions. Those wishing to give early can do so now at https://connect.wvstateu.edu/foundation/give-now.
