Wirt County ranked 42nd among counties in West Virginia by annual earnings per resident, according to data obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau in August.

The median income of Wirt County residents was an inflation-adjusted $20,994 per year. Wirt County had 2,427 households in 2017, with a population of 5,800.

The county with the highest median resident income in the state was Jefferson County. Jefferson County’s median income was $32,170 per year after adjusting for inflation – $11,176 more than Wirt County. It had 20,808 households in 2017 and a population of 55,673.

McDowell County had the lowest annual resident income among counties in West Virginia, with a median income of only $15,726 per year. That was $5,268 less than the median income in Wirt County at the time. McDowell County had 7,702 households in 2017 and a population of 19,707.
