Mayor Goodwin Joins Local Athletes and Coaches to Break Ground on 1 of 10 Fields to Be Turfed in Charleston

Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin today joined local baseball, softball, soccer, and youth sports teams to break ground on the Kanawha City Little League Field, one of 10 fields to be turfed this fall/winter. Charleston City Council approved the use of up to $8.1M in APRA funding for this turfing project during the June 21, 2022 City Council Meeting.

“Turfing these 10 fields will help ease the workload on sports team volunteers, make sure our kids have a place to train so they can compete with athletes from across the country, and drive economic development through sports tourism,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “Thank you to everyone who has shared in the vision to create a more vibrant place for our kids to live and play – you have made this project possible.”

“I remember meeting with Mayor Goodwin during her first few weeks in office—talking about what we could do to help our young people. My response – we need to turf our fields and invest in our youth,” said Council Member Chad Robinson. “I along with many parents and volunteers have worked days and nights on our current fields for our kids to play on. Now with the new turfed complexes our youth will have top notch facilities to compete on.”

The 10 city-owned athletic fields to be turfed as part of this project are: Bigley Field Upper, Bigley Field 2 Lower, Cato Park Lower Soccer Field, Cato Park Upper Soccer Field, Kanawha City Little League Field, Watt Powell Annex Field, Martin Luther King, Jr Center Complex, North Charleston Little League Field, Power Park Field, Suppa Little League/Softball Field
