For the first time in just under a month the Charleston Baseball team lost a game at home. They would go on to split a Saturday doubleheader against Frostburg State after falling in game one.
The Golden Eagles, who were on a 12-game win streak coming into the Saturday lost in walk off fashion to the Bobcats. Due to poor weather, Charleston hosted Frostburg State but played as the away team at Segra Field. This would come back to haunt them as they were walked off on their own turf.
"That's a really good baseball team," said head coach Robbie Britt, "I think you saw the best two teams in the conference go at it today… that felt like a regional atmosphere".
Game One: Frostburg 9, Charleston 8
On the mound for Charleston in game one was Ethan Soderna, who worked 3.2 innings and allowed two earned runs with two strikeouts before exiting in the fourth inning. Will Glazebrook was charged with the loss on the mound, moving his record to 1-1.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead scoring three runs with two outs in the top of the second inning. McCallister had a two-RBI double to open the scoring.
Frostburg showed how the rest of the game would play out after tagging Soderna for a home run in the bottom of the inning. Answering with runs would be a recurring theme for Frostburg State, as they scored runs in the bottom of every frame that Charleston did throughout the game.
UC pushed across one in the fourth inning on a Beckner single but Frostburg added another of their own in the bottom of the frame. They tied the game on a two run shot by to right by Danny Estrada in the fifth.
Charleston plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Martinez doubled home a run, Carreon-Herrara worked a bases loaded walk, McCallister was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Zuccaro reached on an error and knocked in a run.
The Golden Eagles walked 13 times in game one but left 13 runners on base while collecting just five hits. They were outhit 14-5 overall by the Bobcats in game one.
Frostburg added a run in the sixth inning before exploding for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take game one. Mikey Guy delivered the game winner with the bases loaded, roping a ball off the fence to bring home the winning run.
Game Two: Charleston 9, Frostburg 7
Charleston surrendered two runs in the bottom of the first inning as they were reeling from the game one loss. However, they turned it around plating three in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Klaserner came around to score after getting hit in the head with a pickoff attempt that found its way into the outfield. Zuccaro doubled home a pair a few batters later to take the lead.
UC added two in the third capitalizing on the windy conditions at Segra Field. After Martinez scored on a wild pitch, Beckner hit a high pop up that looked to be going foul down the third base line. Windy conditions brought the ball back into play and Klaserner scored on the double.
The Bobcats singled home a pair in the third to cut the lead to one at 5-4, but UC brought home one of their own on a single by Martinez in the top of the next inning.
Charleston scored what would go on to be the winning runs in the sixth inning. Dellerman singled home Zuccaro and was brought home on Kyle West's seventh long ball of the season.
Frostburg cut the lead to two in the sixth but it wouldn't be enough and the Golden Eagles split the doubleheader with the 9-7 win in game two.
Cody Godbold got the win after relieving Dane Sykes of his starting duties in the third inning. Godbold went 3.0 innings, allowed three runs and struck out two.
Andrew Gormley got his first save of the season, going 1.2 hitless innings without allowing a run.
Zuccaro ended the game with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Martinez was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Dellerman was 1-2 with a run scored and three walks. Kyle West gained the MEC lead in home runs, smacking his seventh of the season in the sixth. He was 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
