Seeking their first win, the Golden Eagles hit the road to Northern Ohio on Friday to face off against the Ashland Eagles in an out-of-conference women's lacrosse matchup. Ashland had won their previous matchup at home against Daemen with the slim margin of 10-9 and would prove to be yet another non-conference test for the Golden Eagles.
The Basics
Location: Dwight Schar Athletic Complex
Score: UC 8, AU 11
Records: UC (0-6, 0-0 MEC), AU (4-5, 0-0 GMAC)
How it Happened
Just as many of their games have gone, Charleston and Ashland would exchange two goals to start the game. Darby Stolz would open up the game's scoring at the 12:58 mark and again with 7:38 remaining in the quarter for the 2-1 lead. Goals from Emily Jewell and Camryn English would give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 2-3 just before the quarter ended. Defensively, Georgia Ryan would finish the quarter with two saves as the team would combine for six total ground balls and remained perfect on clear attempts.
Ashland would use the second quarter as an opportunity to dominate the game as they would shut Charleston out for the duration of the period and proceed to extend their lead with three goals coming from Natalie Sonnatag, Cassady Becker, and English once again. Charleston would find one shot more than they did in the first period, but Ashland's goalkeeper Jillian Rekulak would come alive and find three saves on five total shots. The Ashland Eagles would take the comfortable 6-2 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
Despite Ashland finding the opening goal of the second half, Charleston would score three consecutive goals from Destiny Jackson, Antonia Martinez, and Stolz to get back to within two of the Eagles with 3:30 remaining in the quarter. Ryan remained consistent between the posts as she would provide three saves on seven total shots in the period. Although Charleston forced multiple turnovers on defense, they would struggle with the ball on the other end as they tabbed five turnovers in the third quarter alone, and were just successful on 4-6 clear attempts, compared to Ashland's perfect 2-2. Lily Christensen would be awarded a yellow card with 3:17 remaining in the period, allowing Natalie Sonntag to find the man-up goal to maintain a 8-5 lead over Charleston.
Sydney Verlinghieri would strike first in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to just two scores, but the momentum was short lived as Rachel Crumbacher would find her free position shot in the back of the net to hold a 9-6 lead with 9:52 remaining in the game. This would spark two more goals from the Eagles as they would move to an 11-6 lead late in the game. Verlinghieri and Stolz would find a goal each, but with too little time left on the clock for a comeback, the Ashland Eagles would take the 11-8 victory over Charleston.
