WASHINGTON, D.C. - A bipartisan group of House and Senate colleagues, including U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), and members of the Congressional Soccer Caucus, have announced their intention to introduce a concurrent resolution in support of the United States Soccer Federation's bid for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. The resolution aims to highlight the efforts of the New Heights Bid Committee to bring the prestigious tournament to the United States and Mexico.
The members of the group emphasized the significance of women's soccer and the United States' ability to showcase the sport on a global scale. They stated, "Women's soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and no country is better positioned to showcase the sport than the United States." The resolution also emphasizes the potential economic growth, tourism, and development in women's soccer and youth sports that the tournament would bring.
Cindy Parlow Cone, U.S. Soccer Federation President, expressed gratitude for the support from Congress and highlighted the potential impact of hosting the Women's World Cup. She stated, "Our joint bid not only promises to set attendance and financial records but also underscores our commitment to gender equality by hosting back-to-back Men's and Women's World Cups." Cone also emphasized the financial success and global impact that hosting the tournament would have on women's soccer.
The United States has a successful history in women's soccer, with the United States Women's National Team (USWNT) being the most successful Women's National Team in the world, having won four Women's World Cups. The United States has previously hosted the Women's World Cup in 1999 and 2003, both of which were considered successes and helped increase interest in women's soccer in North America.
The Congressional Soccer Caucus, an organization consisting of U.S. Senators and Members of Congress, aims to promote and raise awareness of issues related to sports, including soccer. The Caucus coordinates various briefings and events to highlight the transformative power of sports in communities and the potential they hold for children.
In 2018, the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution in support of the U.S. Soccer Federation's successful bid for the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Senator Capito will also introduce a resolution to celebrate February 7th as National Girls & Women in Sports Day, honoring the U.S. Women's Soccer team.
The resolution in support of the United States Soccer Federation's bid for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm of members of Congress to promote women's soccer and bring the prestigious tournament to the United States and Mexico. The resolution recognizes the potential economic and developmental benefits that hosting the tournament would bring, as well as the opportunity to showcase women's soccer on an international stage.
