U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) released a video statement today to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The message honors the memory of the 2,977 victims who lost their lives on that day.
In her statement, Senator Capito said: "Today marks the 23rd anniversary of the horrific September 11th terrorist attacks."
She continued by reflecting on the significance of this day: "On this solemn day, we pause to remember the thousands of innocent Americans lost and we also honor the patriotism, resilience, and sacrifice of the countless first responders and everyday Americans who went into harm’s way to save lives."
Senator Capito paid tribute to those aboard Flight 93: "We remember those brave passengers on Flight 93 who looked evil in the eye and sacrificed themselves to save countless others."
Highlighting national unity in times of crisis, she added: "In the days after, we saw the power of the American spirit and how it brought comfort, inspiration, and a hopefulness for a better tomorrow."
Concluding her remarks, she emphasized ongoing remembrance and unity: "Today and every day, we must never forget those that we lost, honor the heroes, and remember that our country is strongest when we are united."
