U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito has announced funding for three water projects in West Virginia, secured through Congressionally Directed Spending requests she made for Fiscal Year 2024. The funding, provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, aims to support upgrades to water systems in the state.

Senator Capito stated, “I was proud to use my position on both the EPW and Appropriations Committees to advocate for and secure these CDS awards to support efforts to modernize water systems across West Virginia.” She emphasized the importance of these projects in meeting the growing water needs of families, workers, and businesses in the state.

The funding comes under Section 571 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1992, which allows the USACE to collaborate with non-federal entities on water and wastewater projects. As Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Senator Capito included an increase in authorization for this program in the bipartisan 2022 Water Resources Development Act.

The individual awards include $2 million for sewer improvements in Rowlesburg (Preston County), $1.1 million for the Fountain IV Water project in Keyser (Mineral County), and $1 million for water system upgrades in Belington (Barbour County).
