U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, has cast her vote in favor of advancing Lee Zeldin's nomination as the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPW Committee reported Zeldin's nomination favorably with an 11-8 bipartisan vote, sending it to the full U.S. Senate for further consideration.

In her opening statement, Chairman Capito highlighted Congressman Zeldin's plans for the EPA and his views on its role in protecting public health and the environment. She emphasized his collaborative approach and commitment to transparency as key aspects of his testimony before the committee.

Capito stated, "Congressman Zeldin, I think, was an excellent witness. He described his intent to take a collaborative approach both as Administrator and demonstrated also through his work with Congress." She noted that Zeldin met with all committee members prior to his hearing and committed to addressing issues impacting constituents nationwide.

She praised Zeldin's qualifications, citing his experience as a Congressman representing New York’s 1st Congressional District, which provides him with a unique understanding of legislative processes and federal agency mandates. His background includes service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army reserve and as an attorney.

Capito expressed confidence in Zeldin's ability to implement the President’s agenda at the EPA while adhering to congressional authority. She appreciated his intention to prioritize core responsibilities essential for protecting health and natural resources.

Reflecting on past EPA policies' economic impact, Capito remarked on their significance beyond environmental concerns. "The EPA should support policies and set rules that improve the environment while allowing innovators to grow the economy," she said.

She acknowledged challenges faced by West Virginia due to regulatory overreach but expressed optimism about Zeldin's balanced approach. "Congressman Zeldin has shown that he understands the importance of striking the right balance," she added.

Capito concluded by urging colleagues to support Zeldin’s nomination: "I urge our colleagues to support Congressman Zeldin’s nomination so we can get the EPA back to the basics."
