Cost of college went up for all students at West Virginia State University

In-state tuition and fees rose 8.8 percent for 2018-19 at West Virginia State University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

West Virginia residents paid $8,212 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $666 more than the $7,546 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 115.1 percent more than residents this year, or $17,666. Their price tag grew 6.7 percent from $16,550 in 2017-18.

About 81 percent of the school's undergraduate population are West Virginia residents. About 18 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 87 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 335 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.5 million and 241 students took out student loans totaling more than $2 million.

Including all undergraduates (3,692), 1,641 students used grants or scholarships totaling $22.1 million, and 1,267 students took out $10.8 million in federal student loans.
