BridgeValley Community & Technical College was awarded a $5,000 grant to help nursing students manage stress and better succeed in the program.
The program is called Nourishment for Nursing and will be integrated into the nursing curriculum for seven weeks. It will provide study and testing tips and teach students on using mindfulness and meditation techniques.
“Nursing students typically experience a higher stress level than their peers due to the high stakes exams,” Carla Blankenbuehler, Director of Counseling at BVCTC said. “We felt this would help with retention in the program and also provide them tools to help them be successful.”
The grant was awarded by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission as part of their Division of Health Sciences behavioral health programs.
“By providing Campus Mental Health Grants to public colleges and universities across the Mountain State, we can support student wellness,” said Dr. Sarah Armstrong Tucker, West Virginia’s Chancellor of Higher Education. “We hope this grant helps to assist BridgeValley and their nursing students in addressing mental health as a core component of personal and academic success.”
