McCown Tosses Perfect Game as Softball Sweeps VSU

The University of Charleston softball team adds two more to their win column as the pitching staff twirls a perfect game and a shutout against Virginia State University. The Golden Eagles now have a six-game winning streak.

Game 1: UC 9, Virginia State 0 (5 Innings)Brianna McCown (3-2) was perfect on the mound as she struck out the first 11 Trojans she faced. In total, she finished the game with twelve strikeouts in five innings pitched. The Golden Eagles offense provided plenty of run support for McCown.

The first run of the ball game came off the bat of Olivia Pelfrey as she doubled to left field, scoring Emma Groe who singled earlier in the inning. Jeritza Montero followed that up with a double of her own to plate Olivia Pelfrey, giving UC an early 2-0 lead.

Charleston's hot bats continued in the bottom of the third as Allyssa Lake started the inning off with a double to right field. The Golden Eagles went on to score five runs on four hits and two errors. Montero had her second run-scoring double of the ball game, and Hannah Rose tripled in two runs.

Brionna Bowman closed out the UC scoring for the ballgame in the top of the fourth as she doubled down the left field line scoring two.

Game 2: UC 4, Virginia State 0Addison Mass (2-0) also dominated in the circle, striking out fifteen, while only allowing three hits in seven innings pitched.

Rose started the game out with a bang as she homered to right field in the top of the first inning. The Trojans were able to hold the Golden Eagles to one run until Head Coach Michelle Frew decided to pinch hit Isabella Landrum in the top of the fourth inning. Landrum came in clutch as she singled to left-center, driving in two Golden Eagles, giving them a comfortable 3-0 lead.

UC scored one more time in the top of the sixth inning as Pelfrey singled to center field, driving in Morgan Hoppe who previously reached on a double.

Up Next:Charleston softball will travel to Ohio to face Tiffin University in a doubleheader on March 11 at 1 p.m. The next day, they will head to the University of Findlay to face the Oilers in another doubleheader on March 12 at 1 p.m.
