West's Big Day Propels Golden Eagles to Three Game Sweep of Cedarville
Baseball took game three of their series on Sunday against Cedarville 12-5, sweeping Cedarville for their fifth straight win. They improved their record to 9-4 on the season and the Yellow Jackets dropped to 3-10.
The offense exploded for 12 runs on 12 hits with three doubles, a triple and two long balls. Kyle West hit two home runs to take the team lead at four on the season. He was 4-5 with the two home runs, two singles, and three runs.
Drew Beckner got the win on the mound, he entered in the fourth inning and pitched two innings in relief. He had three strikeouts and allowed just three runners to reach.
Starter, Dwayne Sumler was taken out after the third inning. He allowed four earned runs while striking out seven and walking two.
The Golden Eagles scored in every inning except for the bottom of the 8th. It started with a three run first, West lifted a two run shot to right that scored himself and Dellerman.
After bringing one run home in the 2nd, Cedarville tied the game in the top of the 3rd scoring three runs on four hits to knot it up at four.
West hit his second home run in the bottom of the frame, a solo blast to right that gave UC a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. UC scored one run in both the 4th and 5th innings. Griffin Adkins grounded out and drove in freshman Carter Rust.
Rust started for the first time this season and had a good day at the plate. His first collegiate at bat was a walk and he would come around to score. Then in the 6th he scored after he dropped one into right for a leadoff double and his first college hit. He was 2-3 in his first start with a walk, four runs scored, and a double.
JD Armstrong knocked in a pair in the bottom of the 6th with two outs, bringing the score to 10-4. He ended the day going 1-4 with two RBI and a hit by pitch.
UC capped the scoring in the 7th thanks to a run scoring triple down the left field line by Giano Zuccaro. He finished with one hit, two RBI and a run scored.
The Golden Eagle bullpen continues to throw well as they make their way toward MEC play. Cody Godbold threw two innings in relief and didn't allow a hit.
Owen MacNeil and Todd Douglas pitched in the 8th and 9th innings respectively. Neither allowed an earned run and they struck out three apiece.
Tyler Dellerman was 2-4 with a walk, three runs, an RBI and two doubles.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Friday, March 10 as they take on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in a three game set on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm on Friday afternoon.
