U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, has voted in support of the national security supplemental package. In a statement, Capito emphasized the importance of equipping the country with the necessary resources to restore American deterrence and resolve amid rising threats and what she perceives as President Biden's weakness.
Capito highlighted the significance of this bill in expanding the capacity of the U.S. defense industrial base and replenishing American munitions stockpiles with newer and more advanced weapons. She also emphasized that many of these weapons have critical components manufactured in her home state of West Virginia.
"I have been firm in my support for a national security supplemental that provides security assistance to allies and partners facing aggression, as well as solutions to the national security challenges we face here at home," Capito stated. However, she expressed disappointment that a border component was not included in the supplemental package due to overwhelming concerns conveyed to her by Republicans and West Virginians. As a result, she voted against advancing the bill.
Capito had hoped for an amendment process that would have allowed the Senate to debate and vote on border security amendments. Unfortunately, she claimed that obstructionists prevented this from occurring. Nevertheless, she remains committed to securing the border and hopes that President Biden will utilize the tools at his immediate disposal to alleviate the ongoing crisis.
In conclusion, Senator Capito's vote in support of the national security supplemental package reflects her dedication to strengthening America's national security interests. She believes that by providing the necessary resources and addressing key challenges, the country can restore its deterrence and resolve in the face of emerging threats.
