U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and 42 Senate Republican colleagues have called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to fulfill the Senate's constitutional duty by holding a trial to consider the impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The senators emphasized the importance of upholding the impeachment process, stating, "The House of Representatives has considered this evidence and impeached Secretary Mayorkas. Our constitutional duty requires the Senate to hold a trial. In every previous congressional impeachment of the past 227 years, Congress has been faithful to the process set out by the framers… Never before has the Senate abandoned this duty, even when certain members believed the basis for impeachment was tenuous at best."
Concerns about the situation at the southern border and communities across America were also raised, with the senators highlighting, "In the face of the disaster that mounts daily at our southern border, and in communities across America, the House of Representatives has formally accused Alejandro Mayorkas of demeaning his office. The American people deserve to hear the evidence through a Senate trial in the Court of Impeachment."
Senator Capito, who played a prominent role in this call for action, has been vocal both on the Senate floor and in the media about the need for a full impeachment trial of Secretary Mayorkas. In addition to her efforts in the Senate, she penned an op-ed for the Washington Examiner advocating for the trial.
