WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee held a hearing on the nomination of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Christopher Hanson to serve another term.

Ranking Member Shelley Moore Capito opened the hearing by expressing gratitude, stating, "Thank you, Chairman Carper, for calling today’s hearing," and acknowledging Chairman Hanson's presence with, "And thank you, Chair Hanson, for being here today."

Capito highlighted the importance of nuclear energy, emphasizing the need for increased electricity generation from nuclear sources in the future. She raised concerns about the Biden administration's energy policies and their potential impacts on reliable power sources and economic development.

Regarding Chairman Hanson's nomination, Capito mentioned both his support for certain policies and her reservations about some of his decisions, including those related to nuclear license extensions. She emphasized the importance of efficient management and decision-making within the NRC.

Capito also addressed specific instances where she disagreed with Chair Hanson's approach, such as a proposal to expand telework within the NRC. She stressed the need for effective supervision and direction within the Commission.

In conclusion, Capito expressed her interest in learning more about Chair Hanson's plans for the Commission's work and urged for a focus on critical policy matters affecting the nuclear industry.
