U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) expressed disappointment in the Senate Democrats' decision not to hold a full trial to consider the impeachment charges against U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Senator Capito stated, "It is the constitutional duty given to the U.S. Senate to try all impeachments." She criticized Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats for their failure to follow Senate rules, calling it "truly unprecedented."
Senator Capito emphasized the importance of upholding the law and securing the southern border, stating that Secretary Mayorkas has "repeatedly failed to uphold the law and secure our southern border." She condemned the actions of the Democrats in preventing the Senate from holding a trial and hearing evidence, calling it "unconscionable" and "a disservice to the American people."
Senator Capito has been vocal in her calls for a full trial for Secretary Mayorkas, penning an op-ed for the Washington Examiner, leading Senate floor speeches, and participating in a Senate Republican Leadership press conference on the issue. Alongside 42 Senate Republican colleagues, she signed a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, urging the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty by holding a trial to consider the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas.
