U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, has announced funding from various federal agencies for projects aimed at enhancing health services, economic development, infrastructure, education programs, environmental cleanup, and public housing projects across West Virginia.
Senator Capito, Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), revealed grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for numerous health projects in West Virginia. The funding ranges from $1.68 million to Community Health Systems Inc., down to $228,000 for aging research at WVU.
In addition to her role in Labor-HHS, Senator Capito also serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee. In this capacity, she announced administrative grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) that she secured for two regional economic development councils.
As part of her work with the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, Senator Capito disclosed that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has awarded a YouthBuild grant to the Randolph County Housing Authority. This program supports pre-apprenticeship training for young people aged 16-24.
Senator Capito's involvement with the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (T-HUD) has helped secure two grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). One grant is designated for West Virginia University (WVU), while another is allocated to the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority.
Further demonstrating her commitment to housing development initiatives through T-HUD involvement, Senator Capito helped secure a series of grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Capital Fund Program. These funds aim to assist Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) in repairing and improving public housing units.
The senator also announced funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Partners Network to Generation West Virginia. This funding, which she fought to secure in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will support high-speed internet expansion projects in Lincoln, McDowell, Webster, and Fayette Counties.
Senator Capito, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, announced an award from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for continued rehabilitation of the former Vossloh site in Charleston, W.Va.
Additionally, Senator Capito secured a grant from the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. The funds will be used to create models aimed at improving energy efficiency in home appliances.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, Senator Capito announced formula grant funding from the Department of the Interior (DOI) to plug orphaned wells in West Virginia. This funding was included in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which Senator Capito helped author.
Finally, Senator Capito announced funding from NeighborWorks America to two West Virginia organizations aiming to address community development and affordable housing challenges in West Virginia.
